It's time to talk about work.
In the early days of BlackFemaleProject, I put out a call for career success stories, expecting to gather a dozen or so, then self-publish the collection.
I knew there would be power in our stories about how we thrive at work despite structures in place to maintain the status quo. As the stories came in, it grew clear that our voices would not be contained in a small book. Ché Abram is one of the women who wrote her story early on. “I didn’t even think I had a story to tell,” she says; Ché not only found power in her story, but also in the living and growing BlackFemaleProject community, as our stories about navigating racism and sexism found their way off the page and into public dialogue.
“When we started our Conversation Series, and we hosted writers’ workshops, I didn’t realize it would open this many doors for Black women across all age groups and industries,” she says. “[Taking part in the BlackFemaleProject] has been the most life-changing thing I’ve done to date, as far as personal and professional goals [go].”
In this way the vision of our project has expanded, story by story, and is transforming into a movement that honors the voices of Black women.
Before launching this campaign we had never asked for donations. In hopes of lifting up our stories in as many ways as possible, we are now asking for your support.
We believe deeply in the power of storytelling to spur healing and growth; my own experience of healing through sharing my story is a testament of this belief, as are the many equally powerful experiences of the other BlackFemaleProject participants. We need to hear from more women who have walked in our shoes, a few or many steps ahead on the journey. Financial backing from our community and beyond will allow us to persevere. I hope you will join the ranks of bold, beautiful, brave Black women defying stereotypes, demonstrating excellence with grace, working hard, and loving harder.
This holiday season, our goal is to find 100 BlackFemaleProject supporters to contribute $100. Collectively with $10,000 and #100SistersStrong we will:
Launch our new website
Produce our podcast series
Elevate our sisters' stories to the national stage
Continue hosting events to bring Black women together through intergenerational sharing and community building
Be one of the first 100 supporters to step up for our bold, beautiful, brave women.
