2nd Annual Teacher Truth Perspectives Watch Party and Collection Update
We gathered virtually on Thursday, September 1 for the 2nd Annual Teacher Truth Perspectives Watch Party and Collection Update to hear Teacher Truth interviewees Kia Walton, Ericka Duke, and Abdul-Haqq Khalifah share updates on their experiences as Black teachers since the inaugural story collection in 2021. Over 55 people attended this year’s event and participated in breakout sessions to make meaning of what they heard from the teachers and the Teacher Truth research team.
Our research team presented the findings from our first survey, provided updates on the project's progress over the last year, and highlighted upcoming Teacher Truth activations and events. As we prepare for the final year of our multi-year grant, we have committed to focusing on health and wellness, providing short- and long-term support and resources for Black teachers.
Attendees left inspired and shared their reflections on the event:
What I enjoyed most about the event was listening to the stories of the educators, the data presented by the researchers, and the conversation among them, as well as participating in the small group and exchanging ideas with others.

Mental Health is more than just feeling down. We need more resources that can truly help for the long term, not just for the week.

I am a Black Teacher Project fellow and just being in community helps a lot. I also want to thank Kia for sharing about switching roles. I am in the midst of thinking about switching roles, and that just encourages me. I can still do the work of liberated learning.
